The office is a part of Department of Mines and Geology (DMG) Directorate of Mines and Geology Bangalore.. The Senior Geologist is the head of the district office. This office has technical staff; sanctioned to this office are 03 Geologists, in which 02 posts of Geologists are filled up and 01 Junior Engineer is Vacant. Under the National Hydrology Project the office is equipped with 03 computers and allied peripherals.

The District Groundwater Office is working under the control of Zilla Panchayat and engaged in Monitoring Observation wells and bore wells, and collecting water level data, rainfall data, well inventories, agricultural developments through surface water and ground water sources for a period more than 30 years. The Department felt the necessity of updating information as the ground water activities are increasing. All such information at present is fed into the computers to access when required and subjected them for technical analysis. For example the water levels and rainfall of any month and year in last 30 years can be graphically viewed and reasons can be solved. Similarly it is possible to draw ground water maps, Chemical analysis maps or Geological maps of a given terrain with great accuracy.

This offices has been provided with satellite imageries and NRSA maps which provide enormous information’s about the geology, geomorphology, agricultural developments, surface water sources, ground water sources, the probable yield and so on. The department is planning to establish the Ground water data Users Society wherein the Government and Non-Government bodies interested in ground water and surface water utilities and plan for economical and effective use.

The Senior Geologist’s office in Belgaum has 104 observation wells (Bore wells and Open wells) under its observation in all the 10 Talukas of Belgaum District. The Department under the National Hydrology Project has taken up installation of Automatic Digital water level recorders (or Digital water level recorders) to the existing network of observation wells and bore wells. The temperature of water and the water table can be recorded at fixed regular intervals of one minute to any required interval. This will enable to analyse a close relationship between the rainfall, prevailing temperature, geomorphology drainage’s and the ground water exploitation in the area.

The department is planning to provide laboratories to each of the district offices. At present the chemical analysis of water samples and mineral samples is carried out by the chemical laboratory established with the office of the Deputy Director, Department of Mines and Geology, Belgaum. The analysis for various constituents such as Fe, NO3, F, Bicarbonates etc., can be analysed in the district laboratory.
