1. GENERAL INFORMATION :
1.1 Karnataka is the pioneer state in the production of silk which shares 80% of the total silk production in the country. Sericulture which was restricted to traditional districts made a beginning with mulbary cultivation, is being Practiced in 1634 acres from 8 taluks. A sericulturist earns of Rs. 20000 from one acre of mulbary cultivation and 4 & 5 silkworm rearing in an year .Under farm development programme of World Bank scheme the farmers are extended a loan of Rs. 7000 for plantation Rs. 14000 for buying equipment and Rs. 52000 for construction of rearing Apart from this , SC and ST farmers get free supply of equipment and 50% subsidy for rearing house loan. Incentive of Rs. 10=00 per kg of bivoltive cocoons is given to encourage production of good quality bivoltine Cocoon. Mulberry cultivation is done by men farmers whereas rearing of silkworms is done by women farmers. Women have 33% reservation in all the programmes implemented.
1.2 For development of sericulture and extension of mulbary cultivation, the department has established cocoon market at Kudligi. To provide the technical know how the office of the Deputy Director of Sericulture at Bellary has 5 technical service centres at 5 talukas of the district. Each Technical Service Centre is equipped with sericulture demonstrators to guide the farmers at grass root level. A Government Model Grainage is to supply disease free layings which are seeds for silkworm rearing. With all this infrastructure, district has 654 hectares of mulberry cultivation practiced in 234 villages by 1281 farmers.

Government silk Farm Shreedharagadda comes Under Z.P. Scheme with main objective of growing exotic(bivoltine) seed cocoons and raise 1.00 lakh mulberry seedlings per year seed Cocoon grown is utilised at Government Grainage to produce silkworms eggs which are sold to formers or sold in market to generate income. Seedlings raised are sold at 25 paise per seedlings to SC .and other farmers. |

To Promote sericulture through field days and popularise adaptation new technology among farmers, field day are conducted. nursery is the programme to propagate new race (s36) grow a maximum of 50,000 S Series mulberry mulberry seedlings in selected having fertile land and good water supply is selected and allowed to seedlings under technical guidance of sericulture extension officer and total of one lakh nursery is grown selecting two such farmers in every taluk. Farmer is paid Rs. 12500-00 to grow 50,000 seedlings and sell the seedlings to other farmers not exceeding 20 paise per seedling to compensate amount given to him to raise the nursery. |
