The new Bellary district formed with seven taluks covering a geographical area of 8463 sq.km and population of 16.56 lakhs ( as per 1991 census ). The district is covered with 90 kms of National Highway, 391 km of State Highway, 1140 km of Major district roads, 111 km of other district roads, 2460 km of villages roads including TDB roads, 424 km of irrigation roads and 15 km of forest roads. The road length of all category roads per 100 sq km of geographical area works out to 49 km against the state average of 70 km Hence to reach to the state average 1104 km of road is to be formed in all category of roads. The condition of road and motorable approaches to all villages will definitely add to the improvement of culture and socio economic conditions to the community. For the year 2001-2002 an amount of Rs.175.17 lakhs is proposed for improvements of existing roads and bridges and formation of new roads in the district.
