1. GENERAL INFORMATION:

1.1 Bellary district comprising of seven taluks viz., Bellary, Hadagali, Hagaribommanahalli, Hospet, Kudligi, Sandur and Sirguppa has congenial conditions for Horticulture development. Rainfall being 20" to 30"and temperature varying between 18‘c to 45’c is suitable for taking up dry land Horticulture crops on commercial lines. Total cultivable land in Bellary district is 6,07,000 hectares. soils of the district are mainly redloam and black cotton soil, pH varying between 7.8 to 8.0 is suitable for growing Horticulture crops.

1.2 Important fruit crops grown in this district are Mango, Sapota, Banana, Pomegranate, Citrus, Ber and Fig, vegetables crops are Onion, Tomato, Brinjal, Spices crops are Chilies, plantation crops are coconut and flower crops being Jasmine, Crosandra, Rose, Chrysanthemum are also grown.

1.3 Major objective of the department is development and area expansion of Horticulture crops, also to increase the yield per hectare so as to increase social and financial status of farmers of district and provide nutrition to people of this district and also training to the farmers in preservation of fruits and vegetables .

3. FARMS AND NURSERIES :

 

There are 4 farms and 4 nurseries coming under the control of Zilla Panchayat. Following are the details :

5.STATE SECTOR SCHEMES:

The following state sector schemes are taken up in Bellary district. Brief notes of these schemes is given below.

1.

CSS for Integrated development of spices.

Demonstration and area expansion programme of spices like new varieties of Turmeric, Coriander are taken up. Plant protection equipment’s at 50% subsidy is supplied to farmers.

2.

SS for Integrated development of Tropical and Arid zone fruits.

Area expansion programme of fruit plants and training to farmers on Horticulture crops are taken up

3.

Establishment of Nutritional gardens in Rural areas with National Horticulture Board Assistance

To improve nutritional status of the rural masses and to make availability of fresh fruits to rural people, fruits plants are distributed @ Rs.50 per family.

4.

CSS for use of Plastic in Agriculture.

Giving 50% to 30% assistance, to farmers for drip irrigation in Horticultural fields crops which helps the farmers in terms of labour, water and many factors.

CSS for production and supply of vegetable seeds.

Distribution of seeds of worth Rs.150.00 to each farmer who grow new variety Hybrid and high yield crops.

6.

Organic farming in Horticulture crops.

Conducting demonstration and field day on organic farming in Horticulture crops.

7.

CSS for Integrated Development of cashew

 

Dereloging area under cashew crops.

8.

Namma Mane Namma Thota.

Distribution of fruit/flower plants to farmer of SC/ST/OBC/SF and MF which are perennial in nature. The plants distributed are of worth Rs.2000/-.
