1.1 SCHOOLS:
There are 1292 Govt Primary Schools (which includes 33 DPEP schools) and 51 Grant in Aid Primary Schools in the district. Out of the 1292 Govt Primary Schools the break- up figures are given as under:
(a) Lower primary schools classes (I to IV) = 389
(b) Higher primary schools with classes (I to VII) = 805
(c) Model higher primary schools with classes (I to VII) = 98
1.2 ENROLLMENT:
During 2000-2001 the enrollment of children in Govt Primary Schools was 3,51,144.
1.3 TEACHERS:
The total posts sanctioned in Govt primary school was 7446. . Out of 7446 posts sanctioned 741 posts are vacant.
1.4 BUILDINGS:
There are 5342 class rooms in Govt primary schools in this district. Based on the norms of one teacher one class room, the district require additional 1127 class rooms..Under central OBB scheme 131 class rooms have been sanctioned during 1998-99 as per guidelines of GOI. 60% of the project cost has been released out of JRY funds and remaining 40% will be released by the Education Department (state).
An amount of Rs. 86.46 lakh has been released by GOI as a part of 60% share.The GOK has released Rs .37.16 Lakh towards 40% share .
1.5 OPENING
OF NEW PRIMARY SCHOOLS:
During the year 2000-01, 31 new Primary Schools have been opened. 35 lower primary schools have been upgraded as Higher Primary Schools.
2.1 SCHOOLS:
There are 60 Govt. High Schools and 22 Govt Junior Colleges with High Schools, 60 Grant in Aid High Schools including High School sections in Junior Colleges in this district.
2.2 TEACHERS:
There are 2107 High School Teacher posts sanctioned in Govt. High Schools. 324 posts are vacant.
2.3 ENROLLMENT:
The total enrollment in High Schools during year 2000-01 was 57969.
2.4 BUILDINGS
:
There are 894 class rooms in Govt. High Schools. Based on the information collected from the institutions additional 120 classrooms are required. Seven newly opened High Schools during 1998-99 did not posses own buildings.
2.5 HOSTELS
:
There are two Government Hostels under the control of the Education Department. Govt boys Hostel Chellagurki and Govt. Girls Hostel, Kurugodu. Tq. Bellary. Each Hostel has a provision of 150 students @ 50 students per class. A sum of Rs.12.00 lakhs was allocated towards boarding, lodging charges and salaries of the staff of these hostels.Sri. Morarji Desai Residential school was started during 1995-96 under state sector with an in take of 50 students at Pampa Vidya Peetha. Ramasagara village in Hospet taluk. At present it runs classes V to X with a strength of 245 students mess charges of Rs. 500/- per month per child is provided. All the posts have been filled up.

5. DPEP (DISTRICT PRIMARY
EDUCATION PROGRAMME) :
