1. General Information :

1.1 Bellary district has a geographical area of 8.13 lakhs hectares, out of which the forest area covers an extent of 1.057 lakhs hectares i.e. 13% of the total geographical area. The main objectives of the National Forest Policy is to cover a minimum of 33% of the total geographical area. But ,the forest area covered is less than 33% in Bellary district. Hence, it is necessary to increase the afforestation activities in the district to maintain the ecological balance as per the objectives of National Forest Policy.During the last five years 0.14 lakhs hectares area was brought under forest in the district by implementing the afforestation activities under various schemes.

1.2 The Social Forestry Wing is working since 1984 in the district . From 1-4-1987, the Social Forestry wing is working under the control of Zilla Panchayat Bellary. Since its inception, several affoerstation development schemes are implemented and are under progress. They are social forestry, soil conservation scheme (afforestation) , school nursery scheme, decentralised nursery, D.P.A.P. (c) T.R.V.P, J.R.Y, I.W.D.P., I.A.E.D.P., Compensatory Afforestation Scheme, Employment Assurance Scheme and O.E.C.F..(Eastern Karnataka Afforestation Project.)

1.3 The main objectives of the schemes is to provide the daily needs of people, such as fuel, fodder, wood, small timber and minor forest produce, to generate the degraded lands which are not useful to the community and to prevent soil erosion through the afforestation activities and soil conservation measures and to increase the underground water level .Further the development of afforestation activities causes considerable beneficial effect on the ecological balance of the district and creates more employment generation for the rural people, which leads to rural development in the district.

4. EMPLOYMENT ASSURANCE SCHEME :

The Employment Assurance Scheme is under implementation in this division from 1997-98. The main objective of this scheme is to provide gainful employment to the rural unemployed and under employed persons during the lean agriculture seasons. Under this scheme, Afforestation activities and Soil Conservation measures are mainly undertaken. This scheme is being implemented in seven taluks of this district, covering 27 watersheds. During the year 1997-98 Rs.40.88 lakhs has been released by Zilla Panchayat, Bellary. During the year 1997-98, 11.5 Hect planting was done and 6.44 lakhs PBs were raised in the nursery for Departmental Planting including Farm Forestry and to plant in institutions and other lands and also various Soil Conservation measures were under-taken, such as, Construction of Rubble / Boulder Checks etc.During the year 1998-99, Rs. 58.80lakhs has been released by Zilla Panchayat. During 1998-99 433 Hectares planting was done against the target of 457 Hect and 1.414 Lakh P.B. Seedling raised in the nurseries and other soil conservation measures works are undertaken. During this year against a financial target of Rs.48.00 lakh upto the end of Oct.99 Rs 17.60 lakh has been spent. Upto the end of Oct. 99, Hec. Planting work is done as against the target of 298 hec. And 0.58 lakh seedlings are planted and 0.15 lakh PB seedlings raised in the nurseries and other works are under progress.

5.1 Forestry and Environment Project for forestry and eastern plains of Karnataka ( State Sector )

The main objectives of this scheme is to preserve unique and ecologically sensitive areas of eastern plains of Karnataka. to ensure sustainability of the living standard of the people, to reduce poverty and augment income earning capacity of poor people. to ensure sustainable use of land and other natural resources by setting up participatory process of planning and management.
